The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Leading Cancer Research Organization Recognized by Computerworld as 2011 Honors Laureate for Innovation around Cloud Client Computing with Wyse
SAN JOSE, Calif. –
05/05/2011 -
Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced that IDG's Computerworld Honors Program has recognized The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a 2011 Laureate. The annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.
"The number and quality of nominations this year were very inspiring and demonstrate how valuable IT is to community change," said John Amato, Publisher, Computerworld. "Computerworld is very proud to name the 2011 class of Laureates and showcase their initiatives benefiting society through innovative uses of IT."
Since its founding in 1949, LLS has had a remarkable impact on the course of blood cancer research and treatment. Their mission is as inspirational as it is straightforward: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. A majority of funding comes from LLS's flagship Team In Training (TNT) program. TNT is now the world's leading endurance sports charity training program, helping to train nearly 40,000 individuals every year for marathons, half marathons, triathlons, 100-mile cycling events and hike adventures – all with the objective of raising funds for research, patient services, and advocacy initiatives. To develop and maintain a technology infrastructure that can support a user base this dynamic is no small task.
In 2009, that task fell to Chief Information Officer Jeff Como. Como and his team took a long look at their technical infrastructure and didn't like what they saw. They quickly realized that they were at the end of the road for much of their hardware and software platforms.
"The problems we had were more than simply a function of the age of our hardware and software solutions," according to Como. "The technology world had passed us by since our last major update seven years earlier. LLS needed a new infrastructure that would support a collaborative, distributed model that vastly improves performance, adapts easily to changing technology needs, and provides a superior user experience. Citrix and Wyse helped us rethink our enterprise from start to finish and this honor from Computerworld is an indication that we got it right."
"We are very proud of our role in helping LLS upgrade their technical infrastructure," said Jeff McNaught, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer of Wyse. "Their new technology strategy cornerstone is server and desktop virtualization, impacting the data center, back office, front office and servers. Wyse helped LLS change the way that they use technology to fulfill the organization's mission. Now, LLS can fully explore the benefits and features of cloud computing and virtualization that simply weren't possible before."
The Computerworld Honors awards will be presented at the Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony & Gala Awards on June 20, 2011 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
