Wyse and VMware Users and Channel Partners Champion Client Virtualization as Enterprises Strive To Do More With Less

Client Virtualization-driven Thin Clients Rapidly Replace PCs Throughout Healthcare, Education, Financial Services and Overall Public Sector

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing and client virtualization, today released details of some of their more innovative virtual desktop implementations.  Wyse is currently appearing at VMworld 2009 in San Francisco, California, at Booth #1824.

"The global economic situation has forced businesses of all sizes in all industries to look closely at the costs associated with their IT infrastructure," said Maryam Alexandrian, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Channels at Wyse Technology.  "Increasingly, the hidden cost of maintaining PCs is unable to hold up under such scrutiny. This is particularly true in industries such as healthcare, financial services, and education.  Conversely, Wyse is having a great deal of recent success owing to our channel partner expertise and the benefits of virtual clients, such as lower TCO, smaller carbon footprint, and simpler device management."

Research firm Gartner recently compared the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of personal computers versus what they term server-based computing (SBC).  According to their findings, the TCO of an SBC deployment is about 50% lower than that of an unmanaged desktop deployment, and the direct costs of SBCs are between 12% and 27% lower than traditional PCs.

"Virtualization enables customers to do more with less, and solutions that combine VMware View™, the leading desktop virtualization solution, with Wyse’s portfolio of products delivers on that promise," said Patrick Harr, vice president of enterprise desktop marketing, Desktop Business Unit, VMware. "VMware and Wyse are providing customers with new alternatives to PC replacement that help them cut costs."

Here are what some of Wyse and VMware's customers had to say about their virtual client implementations:

Working with Wyse Technology and its partner CAE, Standard Bank designed a new virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution based on Wyse V10L thin clients running ThinOS, Wyse TCX virtualization software, and VMware View.   Thin clients consume a fraction of the power and emit less heat than a PC, while virtualization software enables the equivalent –and often improved - access to personalized data and applications.

Joel King, IT architect, Standard Bank said, “Selecting the latest PC technology meant that the desktop IT could just about meet the criteria but it was a very tight fit and left no room for error. By consuming a third of the electricity, thin client computers gave us much more flexibility and combined with VMware and Wyse virtualization software we realized that we had a viable solution for delivering the applications and performance we needed within the building’s environmental parameters.”

Wyse channel partner CDW played a critical role in implementing a cost-efficient solution for Michigan's Metro Health Hospital and Health Care System.  "The cost of the hardware, on a per-user and per-unit basis, is essentially the same whether we're providing users with PCs or thin clients," according to Bill Lewkowski, Executive VP and CIO at Metro Health.  "But the thin client experience is far superior.  It's like each user is always right near his or her own computer, no matter where they are in the workflow or where they are in the hospital, on campus, or off campus.  For us, the thin-client payoff has been in workflow, productivity, and our efficiency as a health care provider."

"We might be the education poster child for doing more with less," says said Brian Seaman, Network Administrator at the Western Wayne School District in Pennsylvania.  "We have more computers in the hands of more kids.  We've saved money on hardware, software and energy.  We've been able to cut down on our licensing fees because we are no longer using all of our computers at the same time.  We've also put an infrastructure in place that's insanely scalable; our three-person team will be able to maintain out computing environment even as the district grows."

"We adopted virtualization and thin client technologies to increase students' access to computers," says Julie Carter, Executive Director of the Minnetonka Public School District in Minnesota.  "As we explored that approach, we came to see that it fit perfectly with our goals.  We needed to find a solution that would be sustainable over time.  With the help of The Marco Group and Wyse, we found that thin clients offered greater ease of implementation, management, and maintenance compared to any desktop computers.  Best of all, we could afford to put many more thin clients in classrooms for the same amount of money."

Working alongside Lenovo, Wyse has helped improve patient care at Louisville, KY-based Norton Healthcare.  "Thin clients are the most effective, affordable way for us to meet our goal of leveraging MEDITECH to deliver better patient care, more efficiently," says Brian Cox, Director, IT Customer Service, Norton Healthcare.  "If we'd had to roll out MEDITECH with only PCs to access the application, we wouldn't have been able to deploy nearly as many computers, restricting staff's ability to leverage the system to optimize patient care.  With their cost savings and low ongoing maintenance needs, Wyse thin clients have helped us – and our patients – benefit fully from our switch to electronic medical information management."
