Wyse Technology Launches Winterm Thin Clients Optimized for Local Applications
Wyse®
Winterm™ 941GXL Combines Enhanced Security and Reliability with
Speed and Flexibility
San Jose, CA –
21/07/2003 -
Wyse Technology, the domain experts in server-centric computing, today introduced the Winterm 941GXL thin client, a high performance offering that provides the ability to run complex, CPU-intensive applications on the desktop. The Winterm 941GXL is ideal for environments where local application support is critical, such as retail POS. While traditional thin-client performance is most directly linked to network and server speed (since the applications are run on the server), the Wyse Winterm 941GXL provides fast execution of local applications as well. "Our customers are asking Wyse for thin clients that can run local applications in addition to their server-based applications. A thin-client cash register, for example, can run a local POS application if the network ever goes down without losing any customers", said Brad Rowland, director of product management for Wyse. "With the 941GXL and its Windows® XP Embedded operating system, we are able to offer a fast and flexible solution for local applications, while providing the same compelling values that drive people to our thin-client technology."
For applications that run on servers, a 233MHz thin client is usually sufficient for a PC-like user experience. However, users who are executing some applications locally will appreciate the 1GHz processing speed of the Winterm 941GXL. In addition, today's web-based business environments often require the most advanced Web browser features to support new online applications. To address this demand, the Winterm 941GXL includes the most recent version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 6.0. The new model also offers unparalleled support for multimedia applications, whether Web-based or running locally, offering powerful PC-like performance with out-of-the-box manageability for rapid ROI and high employee productivity.
The model 941GXL is also the most expandable Winterm available and includes extensive support for peripherals as well as more legacy and USB ports, which allow IT managers to connect virtually any POS, bar code, scale or scanner equipment. These features provide significant strategic business benefits for enterprises with specific advantages that include:
- Same Codebase as Windows XP Professional - Customers gain access to more than 9,000 supported peripherals and services, and the enhanced security features of a Windows XP-based desktop with the cost-effectiveness, reliability and manageability benefits of a Wyse Winterm thin client.
- Rich Multimedia Browsing - With Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 browser software, this Winterm thin client has full plug-in support for multimedia, Java applets and security enhancements.
- Optimized Local Application Support - Allows support for 32-bit applications that need to run locally on the thin client, as well as the ability to embed Windows-based line-of-business applications directly onto the device.
- Support For Vertical Market Applications - The Winterm 941GXL can be customized with features such as multiple monitors and local-application execution for financial service companies, healthcare, retail organizations, government and call centers.
