Wyse® Technology, the worldwide leader in secure, managed thin clients, today previewed the latest addition to the Winterm™ thin-client family at the Microsoft Corp. Windows Embedded Developers Conference, bringing the benefits of Windows XP Embedded to the thin-client market. The Wyse Winterm 9440XL Windows Custom-Application Terminal (WinCAT) will feature expanded peripheral support and multimedia capabilities as well as local application execution. Additionally, the Winterm 9440XL will further increase security and help drive down rising computing costs through the inclusion of Wyse's Rapport management software.
"Wyse is combining the benefits of Windows XP Embedded with the security, manageability and affordability delivered by thin clients, offering greater desktop value to customers at a time when the need to protect information and reduce costs is growing exponentially," said Brad Rowland, director of product management for Wyse Technology. "Our secure, managed thin-client solutions provide the flexibility necessary for organizations to evolve with the ever-changing marketplace."
The Winterm 9440XL will be based on the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded operating system, offering organizations the improved productivity, security, and longevity of the thin client approach to desktop and IT management. The Winterm 9440XL will provide support for more than 9,000 peripherals, as well as local application execution, robust multimedia capabilities, and local Internet Explorer 6.0 browsing. Easy to use and manage, the Winterm 9440XL will be available in the first quarter of 2002.
"We're excited that Wyse is taking advantage of the broad peripheral support, enterprise-level security, and enhanced reliability found in Windows XP Embedded in their new Winterm 9440XL," said Jim Allchin, group vice president of Platforms, Microsoft Corp. "Wyse continues to deliver solid Windows Powered thin-client solutions that meet the demands of their broad set of customers."
Secure, Managed Thin Clients
Wyse's secure, managed thin clients help maximize IT budgets while minimizing the risk of unauthorized access to mission-critical information. Winterm thin clients deliver the key elements of security - authorization, authentication, integrity and confidentiality - through four levels of security that complement the server-based software. This includes a first-level user-name and password security shield built directly into the thin client, protecting the server from unauthorized access, support for smart cards as a form of two-factor authentication and support for biometric authentication devices (three-factor) that verify the fingerprint of the user when access to the system is desired, the use of Citrix's Secure ICA protocol, providing up to 128-bit end-to-end encryption of an ICA data-stream, and the elimination of local storage that can be hacked or fail, causing important communication such as e-mail to be corrupted, modified or simply not to be received.
Wyse is bundling every Winterm thin-client model with the Wyse management software suite, which includes the simple WyseWorks Remote Administrator and comprehensive industry leading Rapport Workgroup Edition management software. With Wyse's Rapport and WyseWorks Remote Administrator, businesses are being armed with a comprehensive management tool capable of handling up to 200 users in an installation and with the purchase of an optional enterprise upgrade, up to tens of thousands of users across multiple branch office and management locations. Management tools are core to protecting a business' investment in desktop technologies, simplifying tasks that would otherwise place a significant strain on IT staffs while ensuring maximum benefit from thin-client installations.
